chk4mail (check for mail) is a utility to quickly check multiple folders for new mail.
This little tool is extremely useful if you filter your incoming mail into multiple mailfolders (e.g. using procmail) and quickly want an overview of which folders hold unread messages. chk4mail lists the number of read and unread emails in each folder in your maildirectory and your incoming mailfolder - or you can specify the folders you are interested in on the command line. Supported mailfolder formats include mbox, MMDF, MH and Maildir. Folder formats will be detected automatically and using several formats in for folders in a single mail directory is not a problem.
Apart from just new mail, the program can also display some additional meta information about the messages in your mailfolders, such as the number of messages that you have replied to or that are flagged as important. See the manual page for full details of the capabilities and usage options.
The accompanying chkimap program can be used to do the same for mail stored on a remote IMAP server.
